The Story Behind the Sunrise Gallery

The Sunrise Gallery started as personal therapy after the killing of tens of thousands of innocent people, including thousands of children, in the horrific events of October 7, 2023 in Israel (my home of 50 years) and the just as horrific military campaigns carried out by the Israeli army and government in the name of self-defense that came in their aftermath.

One day I woke up and couldn’t find a reason to get out of bed to greet one more day of death and destruction that was 100% preventable, as it was all being perpetrated by human hands. I ended up closing all of the shutters in my house and literally just sitting in darkness without moving for the most part of that dark day. That shutdown lasted only one day, but just getting up each day remained a struggle.

A few months later, as part of my participation in an online course under the title of “My Moral Duty” offered by an amazing team of two woman peace activists (Etty Hillesum Cards), I was asked to commit myself to one specific daily action that would help me maintain my moral resolution while remaining connected to the uninviting reality that I perceive around me. My commitment to myself was to wake each day in time to see the sun rise. From the first day, I knew that this was something that I wanted to share with others. The Sunrise Gallery is the manifestation of that commitment.

I hope that you will find the same composure and beauty that I do in the daily photographs offered here.
